Are You Prepared for a Hurricane?

Whether you just moved near the coast or you’ve lived there all your life, the fact remains the same: June 1st marked the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season, and everyone must prepare.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an active to extremely active season. NOAA estimates that 14-23 named storms, 8-14 hurricanes and 3-7 major hurricanes will occur during the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, officially beginning June 1 and ending November 30.

More than 35 million Americans live in regions most threatened by Atlantic hurricanes. Instead of waiting for the first storm to make its appearance, the American Red Cross urges families to prepare now.

Steps you can take to be prepared include:
- Build a disaster supply kit or check the kit you prepared last year. Include a three-day supply of water and ready-to-eat non-perishable foods. Don’t forget a manual can opener, battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries. Your kit should also have a first aid kit, prescription and non-prescription medications, and copies of important documents. You can also shop the Red Cross store for emergency preparedness kits and supplies.
- Prepare a personal disaster and evacuation plan. Identify two meeting places—one near your home, and one outside your area in case you can’t return home. Make plans for your pets. Select an out-of-area emergency contact person.
- Be informed. Know what a hurricane WATCH means. If a hurricane WATCH is issued:
- Listen to weather updates from your battery-powered or hand-cranked radio.
- Bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture, hanging plants, bicycles, toys and garden tools. Anchor objects that cannot be brought inside.
- Close all windows and doors.
- Cover windows with storm shutters or pre-cut plywood.
- If time permits, and you live in an identified surge zone, elevate furniture or move it to a higher floor to protect it from flooding.
- Fill your vehicle’s gas tank.
- Check your disaster supply kit to make sure items have not expired.

If a hurricane WARNING is issued:
- Listen to the advice of local officials, and leave if they tell you to do so.
- Secure your home by unplugging appliances and turning off electricity and the main water valve. If you are not advised to evacuate, stay inside, away from windows, skylights and glass doors.
- Do NOT use open flames, such as candles and kerosene lamps, as a source of light.
If power is lost, turn off appliances to reduce damage from a power surge when electricity is restored.

March is Red Cross Month

With March proclaimed as Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter plans to recognize and thank supporters and volunteers all month long whose efforts enable the Red Cross to respond to disasters down the street, across the country and around the world.

“The American Red Cross works tirelessly to be there with help and hope when people need it most–and we are grateful for the public support that enables us to continue our work – here at home and abroad,” said Patricia Thomson, Chisholm Trail Chapter Chief Executive Officer. “Our community and our nation depend on the American Red Cross in times of need, and the Red Cross depends on the support of people in America to achieve its mission.”

“During Red Cross Month, we want to recognize the valuable supporters whose generosity makes the work of the American Red Cross possible,” Thomson added. “In addition, Red Cross Month is a great time for people to get involved with the American Red Cross, such as donating blood; signing up for a CPR, first aid or another lifesaving skills course; giving a financial gift that can really save the day when the next disaster strikes, or getting involved as a volunteer.”

The American Red Cross provides shelter, food, comfort and hope to survivors of nearly 70,000 disasters each year; helps prepare communities for emergencies; is the largest single provider of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills to more than 5 million people a year; supports military members and their families, and provides international humanitarian aid.

The American Red Cross touches the lives of millions of people every year through its network of 34,000 employees and more than 600,000 volunteers in more than 2,000 locations across the United States and more than 30 countries around the world.

“The American Red Cross has responded following the Haiti earthquake in January, working to turn despair into hope,” Thomson said. “The Red Cross is there in Haiti now – and we are also here each day across the country for families who need us.”

Although major disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires capture national media headlines, the day-to-day work of the American Red Cross often takes place in local communities. In the past year, the Chisholm Trail Chapter responded to 510 local emergencies, assisted 1,200 military families, trained 13,500 people in lifesaving skills and provided transportation services to 4,612 individuals.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first Red Cross Month proclamation in 1943, recognizing the American Red Cross as a true reflection of the humanitarian and volunteer spirit and calling on Americans to “rededicate themselves to the splendid aims and activities of the Red Cross.” Every president since that time has recognized the work of the American Red Cross with a Red Cross Month.

American Red Cross Delivers Critical Supplies to Haiti

In an operation that has involved more emergency response teams than any other single-country disaster in global Red Cross history, the American Red Cross has so far spent or committed more than $67 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors in Haiti.

The American Red Cross is currently focusing on three areas through its emergency responders and partners:

- Sending food to those in need, including 3 million pre-packaged meals and funding for World Food Program efforts that will enable them to feed up to 1 million people for a month.
- Providing clean drinking water, including 3.5 million liters distributed to date in 68 settlements. Each day, the Red Cross is distributing enough water for 100,000 people.
- Distributing shelter items, such as blankets, tarps, sleeping mats and tents, to families who have been left homeless.

The Red Cross is also meeting the health needs of Haitian survivors and providing support to Haitian families in Haiti and the US. This includes providing relief supplies, shipment of blood products, family linking services and providing Red Cross volunteers to the USNS Comfort, which have been in Haiti for one week.

To date, 79 percent of the funds have been committed or spent on food and water; 18 percent on shelter items; and the remainder on health and family services.

More than 49 flights carrying Red Cross aid have arrived in Haiti. Additional planes, ships and trucks carrying Red Cross humanitarian assistance are en route. For example, 15 trucks of relief supplies recently arrived from Santo Domingo. A new Red Cross warehouse with more than 50,000 square feet of capacity is also now operational in Port-au-Prince, which means that relief supplies have a safe place to be stored ahead of distribution.

Although the current focus is on addressing urgent needs, the American Red Cross is also looking ahead and applying experience gained after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. For the past five years, the American Red Cross has been working with partners in Southeast Asia to construct water and sanitation systems, provide emotional support and health care, build shelters, restore livelihoods and prepare communities for the next disaster. The American Red Cross plans to offer a similar level of support in close collaboration with Red Cross partners and other international and local aid organizations in Haiti.

A $10 donation made through mobile giving can provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate.

Red Cross Continuing to Push Aid to Haiti Amid Difficult Conditions

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s earthquake, Red Cross responders are working around the clock in Haiti to ensure aid reaches survivors. The American Red Cross has dozens of disaster specialist in Haiti assessing the damage, addressing urgent needs and establishing the foundation for long term recovery.

An Outpouring of Support

So far, the American Red Cross has received $37 million in donations, breaking records for pledges to the Red Cross.

First Lady Michelle Obama released a Public Service Announcement asking people to join her in supporting the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti:

“The images from Haiti are heart-breaking – homes, hospitals and schools destroyed; families searching for loved ones; parents trying to feed their children. But we can all do something. We can help the American Red Cross as it delivers food, water and medicine that can save lives.”

How to Help

While the American Red Cross appreciates the heartfelt offers to travel to Haiti or donated household items, what the Red Cross needs most are financial contributions – whether by check, online or by phone.

You can make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can designate their gifts to Haiti relief. You can also donate $10 to Haiti relief by texting “HAITI” to 90999.

Red Cross offers Tips on How to Stay Warm during Frigid Temperatures

With extreme weather conditions fast approaching the North Texas area, the Chisholm Trail Chapter urges everyone to be safe and prepare as much as possible. Follow these basic tips from the American Red Cross and have a safe and warm winter.

HEAT YOUR HOME SAFELY
· All heaters need space! Keep things that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture, at least 3 feet away from heating equipment, fireplaces and stoves.
· Place portable space heaters on a hard, level, nonflammable surface. Do not put space heaters on rugs or carpets, near bedding or drapes, and keep children and pets away. Look for a model that shuts off automatically if the space heater tips over. Do not use heating equipment to dry wet clothing.
· Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.
· Never leave portable heaters, wood burning stoves or fireplaces unattended. Turn them off before leaving or going to bed.
· Keep the fire in the fireplace by using a glass or metal screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs.

CUT DOWN ON YOUR HEATING BILLS
· Eliminate drafts. Use either insulating tape or caulking strips to surround windows and door moldings. Cover your windows with plastic sheeting. If you have storm windows or storm doors, get them up to keep the cold out.
· Make sure heat vents aren’t blocked by furniture.
· Turn down the thermostat.
· Close off any rooms that aren’t in use and close heat vents or turn off radiators in those rooms.
· Insulate your light switch and outlet plates with foam pads. Cold air can seep into the house through them.
· Use heavy curtains to keep cold air out. Open them during the day to let the sun help warm your home and close them at night. Use fabric snakes or old carpets in front of windows and doors to help eliminate drafts.
· Turn off vent fans in the kitchen and bathroom when they are no longer needed.
· Set ceiling fans to blow air down.

DON’T FORGET FIDO AND YOUR NEIGHBOR
· Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing. Don’t forget gloves or mittens, and a hat, preferably one that covers your ears.
· Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep feet warm and dry and to maintain footing in ice and snow.
· Don’t forget pets – bring them indoors. If that’s not possible, provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure they can get to unfrozen water.
· Check on people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.

Fort Hood Holiday Gift Drive a Huge Success!

The Chisholm Trail Chapter hosted a holiday gift drive on Saturday, December 12, 2009 to support the service members stationed at Fort Hood. American Red Cross volunteers and supporters arrived with more than 100 gifts for infants, toddlers, school-aged children and teenagers. The group spent Saturday morning wrapping and preparing the gifts for children of Fort Hood families. American Red Cross longtime supporter TXU Energy also participated in the event by providing gift bags that included items such as fluorescent light bulbs, LED night lights, and energy conservation tips for the holiday season.

Members of the Chisholm Trail Chapter Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders came up with the service project idea and were heavily involved with the planning of the event. Tiffany Circle members Alice Puente, Lou Martin, Sheri Beatty, and Katie Kalpakis all attended the event, along with local Congresswoman Kay Granger.

“We were very pleased with the event and we now have more than 100 toys to deliver to families in Fort Hood,” said Chisholm Trail Chapter Chief Executive Officer Patricia R. Thomson, Ph.D. “We are so amazed by the amount of support we received from Chisholm Trail Chapter volunteers, donors and board members and we are thankful to them for making this event a success.”

American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter Tiffany Circle members Katie Kalpakis and Lou Martin and board member Barbara Smyers will deliver more than 100 wrapped gifts to the 2-1 Air Defense Artillery Battalion in Fort Hood on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Chisholm Trail Chapter Hosts Fort Hood Holiday Gift Drive!

Some Red Crossers are more eager to give than to recieve this holiday season. Chisholm Trail Chapter leadership society members will host a holiday gift drive on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at our chapter office to show their support of service members stationed at Fort Hood. These American Red Cross supporters will be donating and wrapping gifts for infants, toddlers, school-aged children and teenagers.

Members of the Chisholm Trail Chapters Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders came up with the service project idea and have been heavily involved with the planning of the event. They will be joined by other local American Red Cross supporters for this service project that will benefit the Fort Hood community. “The American Red Cross has been providing support to service members, veterans and their families for more than 100 years, and this project is an extension of our commitment to those who serve,” said Alyson Barber, Service to the Armed Forces Manager.

“It is such a joy to be able to help these families in some small way,” said Alice Puente, Chisholm Trail Chapter Tiffany Circle Co-Chair. “They have been through so much this year and deserve to have a wonderful holiday.” The Tiffany Circle Society is a powerful leadership network of women who give their time, talent and treasure in support of the American Red Cross.

Red Cross to Honor Local Heroes at Stars at Night Gala

Heroes don’t always make headlines. People in our community do good deeds every day. The Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross needs your help to identify “everyday heroes” who have made a difference in Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Wise or Hood counties.

Nominations are being sought in six different categories.

Lifesaver of the Year: An individual or group using life-saving skills such as CPR or First Aid to save a human life.
Emergency Responder of the Year: A professional emergency responder or group that assisted above and beyond expectations in a time of extraordinary need.
Military Member of the Year: Active or reserve military member who has performed an act of heroism or made a significant contribution toward safety preparedness in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Diversity Ambassador of the Year: Individual working to bridge the gap between diverse communities and networks of resources available to meet humanitarian needs.
Young Good Samaritan of the Year: A person under the age of 21 performing an unexpected or significant act of heroism, or displaying outstanding leadership.
Community Spirit Award: A civic, government or business leader who has made a significant contribution to the well-being of a community.

Heroes will be honored at the Chisholm Trail Chapter’s Stars at Night fundraising gala on March 25, 2010, at Billy Bob’s Texas, beginning at 6 p.m. The fourth annual event raises money for the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross. The Chisholm Trail Chapter touches thousands of lives every year. From providing on-scene assistance to victims of disaster, to teaching thousands of people each year how to save lives, the Red Cross is committed to making our community a safer place to live. The Red Cross communicates emergency messages to men and women serving in the Armed Forces, while deployments keep them away from their loved ones. The Red Cross provides the only non-emergency medical transportation program of its kind in Tarrant County – ensuring that individuals aren’t without health care for lack of transportation. None of it would be possible without the support of the community that we serve.

Motorola Global Day of Service

Local Motorola employees spent part of their day today helping with service projects at the Chisholm Trail Chapter as part of their company's Global Day of Service. For the fourth year in a row, Motorola employees around the world took a half day off to volunteer in their communities.

The Chisholm Trail Chapter always welcomes volunteers and has plenty of projects!

Workers from Motorola spent the morning helping outside the chapter building by trimming and weeding along the fenceline, where vegetation has overgrown. Others spent the day indoors helping apply a fresh coat of paint to the disaster training room.

The Red Cross appreciates their service and thanks all of the Motorola employees that helped our chapter on their Global Day of service!

Chapter Welcomes Flora Davis

Flora Davis has made a career out of making a difference and helping others. She believes it is her calling. As a non-profit fundraising professional, Davis answered that call once again when the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter was looking for a new chief development officer.

“I was attracted to the position because the mission of the American Red Cross is compelling, as well as the services provided by the organization,” said Davis. “I believe I am the best person to take this chapter to the next level in achieving their fundraising goals and objectives.”

Before accepting the position with the Red Cross, Davis served as the regional vice president of development for the American Lung Association of the Central States. She brings more than 20 years of nonprofit management experience to the position.

“Flora brings a great combination of experience and proven results to the table,” said Patricia Thomson, CEO of the Chisholm Trail Chapter. “Her track record speaks for itself when it comes to meeting fundraising goals and working with community partners. We are excited to have her join our team.”

Davis will direct financial development programs and donor cultivation for the Chisholm Trail Chapter, which includes 23 counties. The American Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on the generosity of the American people to fulfill its mission of helping people to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

“We live in a generous community of close-knit people,” Davis said. “I am looking forward to working with Red Cross volunteers and supporters to open new doors for the chapter.”

Welcome to the Big Country Branch Community Resource & Development Manager Tim Cox

Timothy Cox has spent his entire professional career serving others – through the military and as a volunteer. When the opportunity to continue his service as an employee of the American Red Cross opened, Cox couldn’t resist.

“The skills I acquired in the military – leadership, management and work ethic – will translate well in providing the services offered through the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross,” Cox said.

Cox was hired as the Community & Resource Development Manager for the Big Country Branch of the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter and officially assumed his duties on July 21, 2009. Cox will be responsible for working with a team to build capacity and support for service delivery in the Big Country. His focus will be to recruit and develop volunteers, increase awareness about Red Cross services and programs in the community, and work to build financial support for Red Cross activities in the area.

Prior to this position, Cox was an active duty member of the United States Air Force for six years, and most recently contracted with U.S. Army Special Forces as an explosive detector dog handler, trainer and supervisor. During his service with the military, Cox witnessed firsthand how the Red Cross helps the men and women of the Armed Forces. In 2000, Cox received an emergency communication from the American Red Cross while serving in the Nevada desert. He learned of a family emergency and, as a result of the message from the Red Cross, he was able to get home to be with his family during an especially difficult time.

Receptionist by Day... Canteen Driver by Night

Our new chapter Receptionist/Registrar Sylvia Randolph has been drinking the Red Cross Kool-Aid! She couldn't wait to get signed up for some disaster training and sign up for an overnight shift on the canteen truck. For those of you who don't know - the canteen is the first Red Cross vehicle to arrive on the scene of a disaster. The canteen is stocked with snacks & drinks and many other disaster essentials.

Last night, Sylvia got her first disaster call and this is what she had to say about it:

3 Alarm, Single Family Fire in Arlington. Indeed, I did! Responded to my first fire, on the first night out with the (Nighthawk) canteen! Other Disaster Action Team (DAT) members that responded, Scott F. (team lead) and Roderick S., are wonderful! Both gave me tremendous support and explained some other tricks of the trades which helped me gain further confidence in my new volunteer position. Special thanks to JD for his awesome commitment in training to make sure “We are ready when they call!”

Welcome to Alyson Barber - Volunteer Services/SAF Manager

The Chisholm Trail Chapter would like to welcome Alyson Barber as our new Volunteer Services/Service to the Armed Forces Manager!

Alyson, a Florida native, recently relocated to Fort Worth from Beaufort, South Carolina, where she served as Donor Resource Consultant for the Lowcountry Community Blood Center at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Her nonprofit experience is broad, having worked for the City of Havelock, North Carolina; the American Cancer Society and the Duval County School District. Alyson is excited about the opportunity to make a difference in the Fort Worth community, and is looking forward to making connections that will help the Red Cross further its mission.

Alyson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from the University of West Florida.

Update: Park Meadow Apartment Residents Recovering from July 20 Fire

All residents displaced by the July 20 fire at Park Meadow Apartments had a safe place to stay Wednesday evening. The on-site shelter had five individuals stay overnight on Tuesday, but no one stayed in the shelter Wednesday night.

Thank you to all volunteers and community partners that helped the residents on their path to recovery during this difficult time!

Update on the Park Meadow Apartment Fire Response

Park Meadow apartment management announced that all but 24 displaced residents would be allowed to return to their apartments late last evening. Residents were evacuated Monday afternoon as a result of a fire at the complex that destroyed 3 units and damaged several others. All 68 residents were displaced Monday night because of smoke and water damage, as well as electrical issues. The 24 residents that cannot yet return are still without power, but have family or friends in the area to stay with, or are being relocated by apartment management.

The Red Cross provided assistance to the residents whose homes were destroyed with clothing, shoes, comfort items and more. Red Cross workers return to Park Meadow today to make sure that everyone is doing well.

Red Cross Assisting Displaced Residents of Park Meadow Apartments

Red Cross workers are on the scene of the Park Meadow Apartments (2700 block of Yeager St.) in Fort Worth. Yesterday’s fire at the apartment complex displaced 68 elderly residents from their homes. While only three apartment units were completely destroyed, residents could not return to their apartments due to minor smoke and water damage, as well as electrical issues. Most residents stayed overnight with family or friends in the area. Shelter was available at the apartment complex – where 15 residents and three apartment staff members stayed the night.

Red Cross workers will be providing assistance to the residents who have immediate disaster-caused needs, and continue to support apartment residents with snacks and drinks throughout the day.

It is expected that residents with homes that were not affected by the fire should be able to return to their apartments later this evening or tomorrow morning. Shelter will be available at the complex again tonight for those who cannot return to their homes.

Red Cross Volunteer Finds Help Through Craigslist

Red Cross Volunteer LeaAnn Layne looked on craigslist for shelving units that could help organize stuff in the disaster department at the local Red Cross chapter. She ran across some shelves posted by Roger Gillinger that sounded perfect. The problem? Money. Red Cross funds are focused on services, not infrastructure. While this small detail would likely deter most craigslist sellers, Gillinger had several positive experiences with the Red Cross as a military member and a police officer. After seeing the Red Cross office, he agreed to donate the shelves, and made another suggestion. He was aware of a friend's son looking for an Eagle Scout project and offered to reach out to see if they would be interested in helping with the delivery and installation of the shelves. They were! Aaron Maier and several other scouts spent a nine-hour workday installing shelves and even reorganizing and putting away the contents on those shelves.

The Red Cross is truly grateful to Roger Gillinger, LeaAnn Layne, Aaron Maier and all of the scouts and family members that made this project possible and helped bring some organization into the Red Cross!

Red Cross at the Arlington 4th of July Parade

Red Crossers participated in the annual Independence Day parade for the City of Arlington. The Red Cross had two exhibits participate in the parade: a canteen truck and a float to thank our military members for their service. The float won third place in the novice category! The Red Cross also provided water to the weary parade walkers and public - though it didn't stay cold for long. Thank you to all of our volunteers who participated in this event!

Independent Electrical Contractors Shed Light on Future Disaster Responses

Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Fort Worth/Tarrant County Chapter members are providing new electrical fixtures, materials, labor and equipment to replace weak and outdated fixtures in the Red Cross disaster supply warehouse in Fort Worth. Participating IEC members include Bean Electrical, Inc.; Cable Electric, Inc.; Crawford Electric Supply; Coty Owens Electric Service, LLC; Humphrey & Associates, Inc.; Summit Electric Supply; Texas Lighting Sales; Tutor Electrical Service, Inc.

The Red Cross disaster warehouse stores disaster relief supplies such as cots, blankets, clean-up kits and water - ready for the next disaster. Previous lighting in the warehouse was outdated and weak, forcing disaster workers to rely on flashlights and even headlights to find what they are looking for in dark and stormy weather conditions. The determination and research of Red Cross disaster volunteer LeaAnn Layne and the generosity of the Independent Electrical Contractors Fort Worth/Tarrant County Chapter created a partnership resulting in a significant financial and human resource contribution of electrical supplies, expertise and labor.

The Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter has responded to reports of storm damage and single-family fires throughout the day - responding to the needs of at least 47 affected families throughout Tarrant, Parker and Wise counties. Damage assessment teams and caseworkers responding met with families to make sure that their immediate disaster-caused needs were met.

Red Cross disaster workers are following up on reports of damage in Euless, Grapevine, Southlake and Boyd (Parker County) this morning. Workers will be doing disaster assessments and making sure all disaster-caused needs are met, including assistance for shelter, food and clothing if needed.

Red Cross disaster workers responded to several incidents during the evening and into the night on June 10:

Chatham Creek Apartments in Arlington - 8 apartment units affected. Red Cross provided bedding, baby formula and other comfort items.
Shadow Creek & Bear Creek Apartments in Euless - roof blew off and caused water damage to several apartments.
Two single-family residential fires in Fort Worth.
One single-family residential fire in Lake Worth.
Roof damage to a home in Poolville (Parker County)

Red Cross is working closely with emergency management, monitoring current weather conditions and following up on any additional reports of damage or displaced families in the area.

- Bear Creek Apartments in Euless: due to roof damage, 9 people are displaced. The Red Cross is working to relocate those individuals into a safe place to stay.

- Shadow Creek Apartments in Euless: due to roof damage, 15 people are displaced, but all affected residents have safe places to stay with friends or family. The Red Cross is assisting with bedding and comfort items.

In both Euless apartment complexes, the roofs were blown off, causing excessive water damage.

- Chatham Creek Apartments in Arlington: Fire displaced 8 families. The apartment complex has units available to relocate affected families. Red Cross is assisting with bedding, baby formula and other comfort items.

Red Cross disaster workers are responding to three separate disaster incidents in Tarrant County. Reports of severe weather damage at two Euless apartment complexes, Shadow Creek Apartments (Industrial Blvd.) and the Bear Creek Apartments (Del Paso), have prompted disaster teams to the area to assess the damage and make sure residents have a safe place to stay.

In addition, a third disaster team is en route to an apartment fire at the Chatham Creek Apartments in Arlington (2500 block of Thomason Cir).
Red Cross workers will be meeting with the families and individuals affected to ensure that their immediate disaster-caused needs are met. Further details will be provided as information becomes available.

Red Cross Hosts Tiffany Circle Summit in Washington, D.C.

Top women supporters of American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter are taking part in a leadership summit for 350 influential women donors hosted by the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., on June 8 and 9.

Sheri Beatty, Katie Kalpakis, Louella Martin and Alice Puente are part of the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders—a powerful leadership network of women who donate $10,000 annually to support their local chapters. Since its creation just three years ago, members of the Tiffany Circle have helped the Red Cross raise more than $13 million.

“These women are part of a legacy of women leaders and innovators who have played a critical role within the Red Cross in helping to serve the American public,” said Gail McGovern, President and CEO of the American Red Cross. “We are honored and inspired by the support and leadership of these women who are giving back to their community and the Red Cross through the Tiffany Circle.”

During its first year in 2007, the program hoped to raise $1 million with 100 members and exceeded its goal by raising $3 million with 189 members. In 2008, the program had a goal of $4.595 million and the group brought in over $5.3 million with 431 members. As a result of its success, the Tiffany Circle program has expanded to 37 chapters with over 500 members and has a goal of raising $6.5 million.

Gifts made by members of the Tiffany Circle help ensure Red Cross chapters continue to have the ability to train volunteers respond to disasters, help military families reach loved ones in an emergency, and enable chapters to teach individuals and families to prevent, prepare and respond to everyday emergencies.

The Chisholm Trail Chapter, beginning its second year with the Tiffany Circle, has 13 members: Sheri Beatty, Kaye Hodges, Katie Kalpakis, Louella Martin, Alice Puente and eight members who wish to remain anonymous. Chisholm Trail Chapter Tiffany Circle members have been pivotal in increasing awareness of Red Cross services in the community.

“The Red Cross and America have always been led by women of humanitarian action and great compassion,” said Melanie Sabelhaus, National Chair, Tiffany Circle, and American Red Cross board member. “Today, we are humbled and honored that so many women have invested their compassion and generosity through the Tiffany Circle, to reach out to those most in need. Local Red Cross chapters rely on the generosity of their communities and we invite others to join us in these bold efforts.”

The Tiffany Circle also has a National Council that is comprised of women from across the country that act as the governing body for the Tiffany Circle and is comprised of 16 volunteers and four chapter representatives. National Council members help plan, execute and manage the Tiffany Circle Summit and coordinate the Day of Service. The Chisholm Trail Chapter’s Alice Puente was welcomed as member of the council.

“I’ve always felt the Red Cross embodies everything that is good about this country. Americans have an unprecedented spirit of volunteerism, and I want to be a part of promoting that philosophy nationally,” Puente said.

The two-day, networking leadership summit is an opportunity to discuss how women can shape the future of the Red Cross. Summit events will be held at the Red Cross national headquarters, the French Ambassador’s Residency, the National Women’s Memorial and the Supreme Court.

June 1 Kicks Off Hurricane Season

The American Red Cross is preparing for the 2009 hurricane season, and urges people who live in areas prone to big storms also prepare. The season officially begins on June 1 and runs through the end of November.

Hurricane Warning Flags
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the 2009 season will be near normal with four to seven hurricanes likely. Predictions call for nine to 14 named storms and 1 to 3 major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

“The time to get ready is now,” said Joe Becker, senior vice president of Red Cross Disaster Services, “Go over your plan and make sure it is still current. Get out your kit and see if anything needs to be replaced.”

Discounted Courses Available to Commemorate CPR & AED Awareness Week

As the Memorial Day weekend officially means summer to many of us; North Texans look forward to outdoor activities at local pools and lakes. Yet accidents can happen if families take a vacation from safety. The good news is that most water tragedies can be prevented, if everyone remembers the basic rules of water safety.

“The Chisholm Trail Chapter would like to remind everyone to have fun this summer without taking a vacation from safety,” said Candace Williams, Director of Health & Safety. “The Red Cross wants to equip people with the information and skills they need to prevent tragedies and save lives.”

According to a recent Red Cross survey, one in two Americans claim to have had a near-drowning experience in their lifetime. Nearly half of the survey respondents will take part in a water-related activity this summer at places where there will be no lifeguard present. If more Americans knew how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), more lives could be saved. The Red Cross recommends that at least one person in every household and place of business receive this training

In honor of National CPR/AED Awareness Week (June 1-7), the Chisholm Trail Chapter will hold discounted Adult CPR & AED classes where you can gain the knowledge and skills you need to respond with confidence to life-threatening situations. All classes will be held at 1515 S. Sylvania Ave. in Fort Worth and cost $45, discounted from the normal $65 fee.

When the Chisholm Trail Chapter asked for help, Chesapeake Energy jumped at the chance and provided it through a set of keys to a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup on Monday, May 4.

Patricia R. Thomson, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the Chisholm Trail Chapter said, “We are thrilled by this expression of generosity and know this truck will allow us to deliver even more services to our community, especially to those people who are experiencing a crisis.”

You need a good set of wheels, a strong engine and a compassionate heart behind the steering wheel when you are rushing around helping people – 24/7. Door Donor Gives Gatorade Too

When Red Cross volunteer LeaAnn Layne answered an ad on Craigslist for a door, she didn't know that she would gain a friend to the Red Cross.

The Chisholm Trail Chapter needed a new door for its archives and records room - a solid door with a lock. Lacey Camp had a door and agreed to donate it to the chapter. While talking, LeaAnn mentioned how the chapter is always in need of Gatorade for Red Cross canteen trucks. These are trucks that are stocked with snacks and drinks for fire fighters and victims of disasters, as well as other comfort items such as blankets and comfort kits with hygiene items for families who have lost their personal effects in a fire or other disaster.

Gatorade is one of the more popular items on the canteen trucks and disappears quickly, as the Chisholm Trail Chapter responds to an average of almost two residential or apartment fires everyday.

Lacey approached the Arlington Area Newcomer's Club about collecting Gatorade.

"I approached my club about sponsoring a Gatorade drive and they were very excited about the prospect of helping our firemen and/or policemen. I just had the ladies bring Gatorade
to our meetings for a couple of months," Lacey said.

They responded in full force. Lacey delivered the donation to the Chisholm Trail Chapter on Wednesday, May 13.

Facebook campaign will decide how Target distributes charitable donation

If you’ve ever wanted to play the philanthropist, now is your chance!
From now through May 25, Target is giving you the power to decide where a $3 million charitable donation will go. The American Red Cross is one of ten non-profit organizations competing for a portion of the multi-million dollar gift.

Target’s Bullseye Gives campaign is running through Facebook, where visitors can vote once a day, every day, for the charity of their choice.

At the end of the contest, the percentage of votes each organization tallies will represent their portion of the $3 million. Final results will be announced May 26.

Any donation that the Red Cross receives from Bullseye Gives will go toward supporting the humanitarian work of the Red Cross: sheltering, feeding and counseling victims of disasters; providing nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaching lifesaving skills; and supporting military members and their families.
